hHBP: How did Harry not realize the hand writing in the Half-blood Prince’s potion book was the same as the hand writing he had spent 5 years reading off a black board?
It got better.
Hope reveals what we have been able to suspect for some time now: the person in the Ark was not really him. It was a Hope created by Bhunivelze, and it did not contain Hope’s soul.
Even though Hope’s “out of character” behavior now has an explanation, there’s still much left to be desired for his character arc throughout Lightning Returns. It’s shortly before the final dungeon, and the only “development” we’ve seen from him so far is a justification for his unbelievable behavior. It’s not bad storytelling, per se, but I feel like they could have done so much more with his character than they did.
Lightning: Do you see it? Go… It’s a new world, a world of hope. And it’s waiting for you to be born again.
Hope: I can’t see you!!
Lightning asks Hope if he can see “it” - a new world filled with joy and hope. However, the first thing Hope says back is, “I can’t see you!!”
Hope couldn’t see it. The new world that Lightning explained was not one filled with happiness… not without her in it.
Just as Lightning said herself, the new world only had “hope”. But without her in it, there would be no “light”. Bhunivelze wanted to create a world filled purely with light, but at the same time, his plan would not allow “hope” to exist.
You see? Both hope and light are essential within the planet. One cannot function without the other. Thus is the relationship between Hope and Lightning - they need each other. Hope couldn’t see a happy world without Light, and Light needed to bring Hope back to the world.
And in the end, Hope goes back for Lightning because the world, and his world, wouldn’t be complete without her.
